Even coverage on a large course — clean, time-aligned announcements in every zone
A zoned, Dante-synchronised sound system for the entire sports venue — even and time-accurate coverage from the competitor area to the audience.

- Part of the audience is at the other end of the venue — but the announcements still have to reach them
- At an equestrian event a sudden loud announcement can cause panic in the animals
- The commentator's voice should land everywhere at once — no time slip, no echo
- At running and cycling races the start, finish line and refreshment points are far apart
- The weather is unpredictable outdoors — a sudden shower can stop everything
How we solve it
The biggest challenge at a sports event is radiating a large area evenly. The Audinate Dante network protocol is key here: a sound system distributed over several thousand square metres can run in sync over a single UTP cable or fibre. The same source — commentator, results, background music — can be delivered to the entire area of a sports ground, arena or equestrian venue, with independent levels and time alignment per zone.
The zones are not covered by one central system but by multiple d&b E-Series point source loudspeakers placed along the course, in Dante sync and with delay timing. That way the commentator's voice arrives at the start, the finish, the audience area and the VIP zone simultaneously and without echo — we are not pushing the volume up, we are aligning position and phase precisely.
At an equestrian event controlled SPL is not an option, it is a baseline. Around the competition field, the starter box and the warm-up area we set the zone level 6-12 dB below the audience area. Brickwall peak limiting runs in the wireless microphone chain, so an accidental bump, noise or nearby source cannot produce a sudden peak at the output.
The commentator, results announcements and background music run on separate input channels, with a Shure wireless set (headset or handheld), and a wired backup microphone on request. At running and cycling races the start-finish, the refreshment points and the finish area can each be managed as individual Dante zones. For outdoor venues we install in a weather-protected build, with a pre-agreed stop-and-restart protocol for storms.
A specific project — how we handled it
European Masters Throwdown (EMT) finals — 264 athletes, international CrossFit competition
EMT is a European-level CrossFit championship with athletes from several countries present at the same time. We delivered the finals on multiple occasions at different venues (Papp László Sports Arena, Gyál Sports Hall), with a field of 264 athletes. At a CrossFit competition the challenge is the combination of high background noise — athletes and equipment — with the simultaneous audio demands: an energetic, motivating atmosphere for the competitors and audience, while the clarity of announcements and results must not be compromised.
The competition area, the audience area and the announcer zone are each treated as separate zones, with independent levels per zone. Background music and announcements run on separate channels, and the whole system is sized and tuned to the event's high background noise — so that the athletes get a motivating sound and announcements remain clearly intelligible.
The EMT finals are a recurring engagement for us year after year. The organiser has relied on us to provide the technical backbone for this international field over several seasons.
